Top 5 things equestrians should keep in the car

As an equestrian, my car often doubles as a mobile storage unit! It’s packed to the brim with everything I need for the yard, work, and any emergencies that might pop up along the way. Alongside the classic car necessities like a spare tyre, oil, and jumper cables, there are a few equestrian-specific items I always make sure to have on hand. These five essentials are lifesavers for emergencies, convenience, and those unexpected horsey moments.

1. Winter Warmers

No matter the time of year, I always keep a stash of winter warmers in the car. Yard gloves, extra layers, and a thick blanket are non-negotiables for me. Whether you’re dealing with a breakdown in freezing weather or waiting out a rainstorm, having something warm on hand can make all the difference. Staying warm means you can focus on solving the problem rather than shivering through it!

2. Boots

Driving in muddy boots is not only messy but can also be dangerous. Wet, slippery pedals are a recipe for disaster. Since you never know when you might need to make an unexpected yard trip, I keep a spare pair of boots in the boot (pun intended). They save my driving shoes from getting ruined and ensure I’m ready for whatever the day throws at me.

3. Spare Headcollar and Lead Rope

Have you ever been driving to the yard and spotted a loose horse? It’s happened to me more times than I can count! Sometimes it’s one from my own yard, and other times it’s a random escapee. I’ve learned the hard way to keep an old headcollar and lead rope in the car. Scrambling to fashion something out of baling twine or clothing is far from ideal when you’re trying to catch a loose horse.

4. Duct Tape

Duct tape is a miracle worker. From temporary repairs on rugs to patching up boots or securing a broken headcollar, it’s one of those items you’ll be thankful to have in a pinch. It takes up next to no space and has endless uses, so I always have a roll tucked away.

5. Torch

A reliable torch is an absolute must, especially during the darker months. Whether you’re checking on the horses late at night, trying to locate something in the depths of your car, or dealing with a roadside issue, good lighting is invaluable. I opt for a rechargeable torch, so I’m never left fumbling in the dark.
